Adventures in tongue ties

Anyone who knows me probably knows about Nathan's tongue tie. I don't think I really wrote much about it on the blog, (I'd have to look) but let's just say it was the low point of those first few months for me, and I have become pretty passionate about posterior tongue ties as a result. I toughed it out far too long before getting help, and I was so determined to address any issues Viv might have in that area ASAP, thus the LC appt on Day 3 and clipping on day 5. There definitely seems to be a genetic component for us since Brian and many other family members are tongue tied as well.

The pediatrician confirmed what the LC had said and was definitely more supportive of getting it addressed quickly than 2 years ago (same practice, different doctor). I don't know if there is just more awareness now or what, but it was very encouraging.

The pediatric dentist we were referred to was in Shelby Township which is a hike from Ann Arbor, but everyone seemed to agree that Viv's tie was pretty thick and far back so we were willing to make the trek. Instead of using scissors, like the 2 times with Nathan, she uses a laser to allow more precision and less bleeding. She was great. She took tons of pictures and videos and spent almost an hour with us doing the consultation and procedure. Not too shabby for having fit us into her schedule with two days notice.

It was really hard to hear her cry, but having had the experience twice with Nathan (though that was faster since they used scissors and not a laser) I knew that she wouldn't stay upset long. So far she's been recovering pretty well. She slept super soundly for about 2 hours afterwards allowing Brian and I to have a lovely lunch together and other than a little fussing and a tiny bit of blood, she's been pretty unfazed. She does keep sticking out her tongue, which I consider winning. Nursing hasn't seen a huge improvement yet, though it's a little better. We'll have to stretch her tongue and massage the wound area four times a day for about a month while it heals, yuck. But we're optimistic that this will fix it.
